This notice is a little early to give members plenty of notice about our Christmas break up. Our Christmas Bar-B-Q will be on Sunday 11 December, 11am at the Proserpine Community Centre.
Please let me know by Monday 5 December if you are coming for catering. Members are asked to please bring a salad. Saturday 10 December will be just a normal research day for members, no discussion group meeting in December.
Our FH library will be closed between Christmas and New Year. The last research day will be Thursday 22 December 2016, reopen Tuesday 3 January 2017. There is no discussion group meeting in January, our first meeting for 2017 will be Saturday 11 February, then 11 March will be our AGM. Our first sausage sizzle for 2017 will be Saturday 18 March, and its not too early to put your name down to help so that you get the time slot best suited to you.
Library hours are Tuesdays 4pm to 7pm and Thursdays and Saturdays 10am to 2pm
I have printed out a list of the top 100 web sites for 2016, almost half of them are free. List is in our FH library for members to try. Time is running out for those members wishing to order the UK birth and death certificates for 6 pounds each, offer ends 30 November. Usual price is just over 9 pounds from the GRO. 6 pounds is just over $10 in Australian money. Births can be ordered for the period 1837 – 1915 and deaths 1837 – 1957. The births for this period have the mothers maiden name, so there is less chance of getting the wrong one. Before this offer the mothers maiden name was only on the index from 1911 forward. The certificates are emailed PDF in 5 working days, before this trial offer one had to wait 6 weeks by snail mail. This offer is too good to miss, so don’t delay.
Elizabeth’s workshop went well yesterday and was well attended. We have at present in our library 4 films of civil registers for Guernsey, Channel Islands. If you have research in this area it might be a good idea for you to take a look at these films before they go back.
Don’t forget, new magazines arriving weekly for members to borrow. Until next time, a happy Christmas and New Year to all our members and may you find all your ancestors in 2017. Linda
